Owner Sherry Russell, CNP, was told by a long-time resident that Rio Grande hasn’t had a medical practice since the early 1940s. That all changed last month when she opened Rio Family Healthcare, offering family practice medicine and urgent care services at her location on Ohio 325.

Russell’s family roots run deep in Rio Grande. Her grandfather’s side of the family was one of the founding Welsh families.

“I love Rio Grande. It’s a great area,” said Russell. “I thought it was really cool that we’re back and opening the first medical business in a very long time.”

Russell, who has a varied background in healthcare, ranging from the emergency room in a hospital to caring for patients in the prison system, as well as a strong mental health background, is joined by Chelsea Caldwell, CNP, who also has a strong ER background. Along with their support staff, they work to provide the best care possible to their patients, which include scheduled family practice patients and urgent care walk-ins. The practice can even draw labs on site and also has an EKG machine. Russell is already working on expansion plans for the future, including the addition of an x-ray machine.

Because Rio Family Healthcare is not affiliated with any one facility, Russell said they can provide referrals to specialists wherever the patient chooses should the need arise.

In just the first four weeks, the practice saw 600 patients.

“We all appreciate the fact that the community has been so supportive of us and they trust us with their healthcare needs. That means a lot. It really does,” said Russell.

They currently accept Medicare and Cigna insurances, as well as straight Medicaid, and are working on insurance accreditation with other companies. They offer a $40 flat fee self-pay per office visit option, as well.

Located at 100 State Route 325 S., Rio Grande, hours of operation are currently Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon.

Urgent Care is walk-in, no appointment necessary. Hours are Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-8pm, Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.- noon.

Healthcare isn’t the only service available in the building. Russell also opened Elite Aesthetics, LLC, which has its own lobby, procedure room and massage therapy room. Currently offering services like botox, dermal fillers and Kybella, Russell is also working to expand its services to include chemical peels and micro needling. Tina Clary, LMT also offers massage therapy.
