As of December 31, 2017, Skatesville, USA is back under the ownership of Patty Filie, whose family opened the rink 36 years ago. Opened in February of 1982 by Johnny and Kate Mathews, their daughter Patty worked various jobs at the rink during her teen years alongside her parents and brother.
Eventually, her family stepped away from the business and Filie took over. She operated it for 24 years, until her father’s illness made it necessary for her to step away from the business and she leased the space to a tumbling gym.
In 2015, Filie reopened the rink, when people started expressing interest in seeing it return and then turned it over to new management, who operated it until the end of 2017 when she regained ownership.
Overall, Filie’s goal is to offer a safe place for children to have fun.
“It’s a place for kids to come and have fun. It’s a socializing place,” said Filie, who commented on the limited number of entertainment options for youth in the area. “I think, as a community, we need to support all these businesses. Mine included, but also all the other ones.”
Drawing on lessons her father taught her about the need to “run a tight ship” and ensure there was discipline, Filie said the safety of the children visiting the rink and easing concerns of parents are her top priorities.
“I hope they’ll come back and try me again. I encourage parents to stop in and see how we’re running the rink. If they have any questions, they can call me,” said Filie.
In addition, Filie said police officers are on-site Friday and Saturday nights to assist in her goal.
Skatesville USA is open Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. On Saturday afternoons, the rink is open from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for children 12 and under. In addition, they will host private parties throughout the week.
