Gallia Academy High School’s Blue Devils defeated visiting Portsmouth 76-50 in a makeup Ohio Valley League basketball game on a rainy night in the Centenary gym Saturday night.

The win left GAHS 14-1 on the year and 8-1 in the OVC. Portsmouth dropped to 9-5 overall and 4-4 in the league.

Gallipolis will resume league play at Coal Grove on Jan. 30. Portsmouth will play at Chesapeake on Tuesday. The Blue Devils placed four men in double scoring, led by Zach Loveday’s 15 points. Evan Wiseman added 14, Justin McClelland 12 and Logan Blouir 11.

D.J. Eley paced the Trojans in scoring with 13 points. Dan Jordan added 11 and Danny Lattimore finished with 10.

Gallipolis jumped out in front 10-2 during the first few minutes of play, but the Trojans bounced back to knot the count at 19-19 after one period.

PHS’ only lead was 17-16 in the second period. Gallipolis led 36-23 at halftime after outscoring the visitors 17-4 in the second period.

The Gallians were on top 50-33 going into the fourth quarter. Coach Gary Harrison cleared his bench during the final minutes of play.

Gallipolis was 4 of 8 at the foul line. PHS was 5 of 10.

It was Gallia’s third win of the night over the visitors.

Cody Lane’s GAHS freshmen tripped the PHS frosh 35-32 in overtime in the evening’s first game to improve their record to 8-2.

Gallipolis led 7-2 after one period. Portsmouth trailed 19-11 at halftime, but led 29-28 going into the final quarter. GAHS rallied to knot the count at 30-30, forcing an overtime.

Reese Johnson led Portsmouth with 16 points. The PHS frosh dropped to 3-9 on the year. Mike Beasly paced GAHS with 13 points.

In the JV game, Gallipolis downed the Little Trojans, 46-22.

Gallipolis led 7-1, 20-3 and 34-14 at the quartermarks.

Gallipolis improved to 12-3 overall and 8-1 on OVL play. Portsmouth dropped to 3-12 and 0-7 in league action.

Nick Howell led Portsmouth with 12 points.
