With the recent launch of Bossard Memorial Library’s Digital Newspaper Archive the community can now research Gallia County history through its newspapers from the comfort of home.

Newspapers available for viewing include the Gallipolis Daily Tribune (1895 through selected dates in 2017), Times Sentinel (1966 through selected dates in 2017), Gallia Times (1946-1966), Gallipolis Tribune (1901-1902), Daily Tribune (1907-1928), and Saturday Times Sentinel (2002-2003). Not all issues are available for all years, but the according to Executive Director Debbie Saunders, the library plans to continue with the digitization of the Gallipolis Daily Tribune moving forward and has other publications available on microfilm they are considering for digitization in the future.

Prior to the digitization project, researchers had to travel to the library and search through the Library’s microfilm collection, without the aid of indexing. Through a contract with Advantage Preservation, funded by the Library’s Technology Fund, over 325 reels of microfilm were scanned, indexed and made available on an online, fully searchable database. The Digital Newspaper Archives portal allows researchers to search the digitized newspapers using people, places or events keywords and years of publication, as well as browse by title or year.

“On behalf of the Library, I wish to express appreciation to the taxpayers for their support of the Library, which enables the Library to provide a wide variety of unique programs and services to the community,” said Saunders. “We express appreciation to the publisher of the Tribune for granting permission to the Library to have this microfilm digitized, indexed, and available for online research.  Lastly, we are grateful to URG Davis Library Director Amy Wilson for loaning several reels of microfilm to the Library for this project.”

To celebrate the launch of the Archives, the Library will host a Digital Archives Scavenger Hunt utilizing the portal. Patrons interested in participating should visit the Bossard Memorial Library website on January 21 to view a short list of questions that can only be answered by searching through the digitized newspapers. Contest requirements and a photo of the prize to be awarded will also be announced that day.
