The Board of Gallia County Commissioners is writing this letter to the editor to provide information regarding dog tags to our county residents. All proceeds from the sale of dog and kennel tags in Gallia County are deposited into the Gallia County Animal Shelter Fund. These funds allow our County Dog Warden & Assistant County Dog Warden to operate our County Dog Shelter.
All dogs, even if your dog is a full time house dog, are required by the Ohio Revised Code to have a new dog tag each year, unless you purchase a life time tag for that specific dog. Failure to have a dog tag on your dog could potentially result in a fine.
Having a current dog tag on your dog will assist our County Dog Wardens in finding their owner and returning your pet to you safely. Stray dogs found without a dog tag are required to be kept a minimum of 3 days. A dog found with a dog tag must be keep for a minimum of 14 days. Our County Dog Wardens make every effort to find the owners of stray dogs and reunite them with you as soon as possible, but without a dog tag sometimes that becomes a real challenge. Dog & Kennel tags can be purchased at the Gallia County Auditor’s Office or at the Gallia County Animal Shelter when you adopt or reclaim a dog.
Our Gallia County Animal Shelter has a Facebook page with pictures of dogs that have been found as strays and dogs that are available for adoption. If your dog is missing, please use this face book page to post a picture of your missing dog and your contact information so our staff can assist you with finding your lost pet.
The Gallia County Animal Shelter is located at 186 Shawnee Lane, Gallipolis, Ohio. Shawnee Lane is across from Brown’s Exxon on State Route 160 just past Holzer Hospital. Our Shelter hours are Monday 10am – 7 pm and Tuesday thru Saturday 10am – 1pm. Our Shelter phone number is 441-0207, and for after hours emergencies only please contact Dog Warden Brenda Wright by work cell phone at 339-2976 & Asst. Dog Warden Laurie Cardillo by work cell phone at 339-2986.
We encourage everyone to visit our Shelter and we hope you will find a special pet to become a part of your family.
