Redlands, CA – Mildred Louise Layne, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, Dec 19, 2017, at Redlands Community Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born in Gallia County, Ohio on Oct 14, 1926, to Harry H. and Bessie Shato Clark. She grew up in Clay Township and graduated from Hannan Trace High School in Mercerville, Ohio.
She married Howard Marlin Layne in Gallipolis, Ohio on December 22, 1945, six years after the start of World War II as Howard headed off for military service. Howard preceded her in death on Oct 10, 2012, after 67 years of marriage.
They focused on their careers and never had children of their own. However, they were always the favorite aunt and uncle and were adored by all of their nieces and nephews. Mildred Louise was lovingly known by all of her relatives throughout her entire life merely as “Midger”.
While Mildred’s husband pursued a military career in the Air Force, she pursued a similar career, first as an employee of and then later as the manager of various Air Force base exchanges through AAFES, the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. She enjoyed a long career as an AAFES manager until her retirement in the early 1990s.
They were stationed throughout the United States, serving assignments in Massachusetts, Ohio, Florida, and California. Their favorite location was southern California which was where they chose to live out the remainder of their lives.
Mildred was preceded in death by all of her siblings, Frank, Everett, Pauline (Six), and Joe. Mildred will be laid to rest in Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands, California.
