I just wanted to take a moment and discuss the Police and Fire levy for the Village of Rio Grande and to clarify some confusion. The University of Rio Grande is running a Levy that is separate from ours at the Village of Rio Grande. Our levy is a renewal, for the successful levy that the taxpayers graciously passed in 2011.
This levy greatly assisted the Police and Fire Departments in their time of need. Unfortunately our critical emergency services are not immune from our continuing cost of living always on the rise. The Levy that passed in 2011, provided the Police Department with the ability to increase coverage for road patrol, a School resource Officer for our Elementary school, and replacement of our cruiser that had over 200,000 miles.
The Fire Department was able to purchase a ladder truck, facility to house the truck, and life saving safety equipment for our Firefighters. This levy passed in 2011 created two public safety agencies for the village of Rio Grande that are better equipped, better trained, and better staffed to aid the citizens of our community in their time of need. The Police Department has 2 successful K9’s. Our K9’s have assisted in our County with all surrounding agencies. Through the hard work of our K9’s and the Prosecutors Office we were able to receive drug forfeiture moneys to pay off our cruiser and to purchase another cruiser.
We are asking for your vote again to renew the levy so that we can maintain the high standard of service we are providing now, well into the future. Times are tough, crime and emergencies never sleep, so we need your support to serve you in the most efficient and productive way we can. We live in a great community and my staff will work hard to keep it that way, but without the renewal we will have to reduce our patrol hours considerably.
Respectfully Chief Chris Dodson
